In a bold move towards modernization, Ukraine plans to deploy 15,000 uncrewed ground vehicles (UGVs) by the end of 2025, a response to the pressing manpower shortages on the battlefield. Kateryna Bondar, a Fellow at the Wadhwani AI Center, emphasizes the urgency of this need: "This creates an existential need to substitute human roles with robotic systems." As the Ukrainian military has rapidly expanded its drone capabilities from a few thousand to a staggering 2 million in just a couple of years, the leap to ground robots is more complicated but equally vital.
The Mechanized Army: From Concept to Combat
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense's approximation of $150 million for UGV contracts this year indicates a dramatic increase in investment for military robotics. The array of UGVs developed in Ukraine includes designs for roles such as logistics support, mine clearance, and combat, decidedly shifting the landscape of modern warfare. Notably, trials conducted by the BRAVE1 defense incubator showcased 70 different UGV types. However, only about 10 to 15 types are actively functioning at the frontlines, pointing to logistical and operational challenges inherent in deploying larger robotic systems.

While optimism abounds regarding military robotics, practical implementation faces hurdles. Bondar outlines critical logistical concerns: "Imagine bringing a 1,000-kilogram machine to the front line. If it runs on fuel, you need to transport it, and if it operates on batteries, they must be sizeable and often require generators to recharge." This complexity highlights why bulky UGVs have not yet reached frontline scenarios as readily as smaller drones.
